About Cantón Tunimá Chiquito and Guatemala
The UN Human Development Index ranks Guatemala as the third poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and in the bottom 10th percentile of all countries for income inequality. There are more than 3 million people over the age of 15 in Guatemala who are unable to read or write, and more than a million who are living below the poverty line of $1.90 a day. Guatemala has ample natural resources and is the most populous country in Central America. Poverty and inequality rates, however, are prevalent and growing, particularly within the indigenous population.
Guatemala’s small villages and remote communities such as Cantón Tunimá Chiquito often lack access to quality school structures and classrooms, and a disproportionately large number of those living in poverty are women. The village of Cantón Tunimá Chiquito is a rural community of approximately 150 people located in the Huehuetenango department. Most community members are subsistence farmers who rear livestock and grow beans, potatoes, and corn.
